More than an author, a business

Build your brand.

You book is set for pre-order. Finally your dream of being a published author has come true. As you anticipate your book going live there are a few things you should be doing.

Create a social media page for your book on every format you can. Invite people to like it, follow it, and share it. Talk about your book everywhere you go. Create a sales pitch and practice in the mirror if you have to, as you are your best option. Be a walking talking billboard for your book, your business.

The world does not know your name, yet. It is up to you to change that fact. Get some promo cards made, whatever $9.99 spacial should get you off to a good start. Go to local events. Meet new people. Be charming, engaging, and likable. Hand out your cards. When you travel, please do the same.

Visit www.GoodReads.com and set up your author's page. Search your book title and claim your book. Visit https://authorcentral.amazon.com and set up your author's page. Search your book title and claim your book. Both of these platforms allow authors to connect with their readers.

Remember, being an author is your business and you have to put in the work. Look for book signing opportunities in advance. Hustle, network, grind, and put in the time.

Find your targe audience

They could be looking for you too.

Who are your fans, potential fans? What events are more likely to group them together in large numbers? I enjoy festivals, block parties, and street parties. They have a diverse group of people gathered together eating, drinking, and having fun. There are a cornucopia of vendors, as well. Vendors, unlike attendees are stuck there for the duration of the event. IN my experience they are the easiest customers to sell. After sitting there for an hour or two vendors often visit other booths.

Everyone is a potential customer. I have sold to my car service drivers, airline employees, hotel customers and staff, etc. As time passed I learned that different works sell better at different events and so I made adjustments. On your journey as a published author you will learn, adjust and grow.

No one will know who you are unless you let them know. Talk about your book everywhere you go. Add people to your social media who add value to your business: fans, promoters, venue owners / managers, etc. It feels really nice when the call comes in saying, "I have the perfect event for you..."

maximize your social media

Goodbye Lookie-loos

Fans and clients are my first priority when it come to my social media platforms. Before I was published it was a very different story. I enjoyed the jokes, funny videos, baby pictures, etc, however, once I became published, I needed to sell books.

With that in mind I unfriended and un-followed the lookie-loos. If there was no benefit of having them, they had to go. I needed to fill my friend lists with people who will attend my events, not people who are watching and waiting to see if I succeed or fail. I needed people who hosted and promoted.

Now don't get me wrong, I still have friends and family on my social media, but know this, less then 5% have never purchased a book or attended an event. Some people have these wonderfully supportive families and the best friends ever. I was not that lucky. The kindness of strangers is epic, and in time those strangers could become the best friends you have ever had.
